Music

THE SONG OF THE MONTH
This is one of the kids’ favorite parts of our music class. Every month we either get to learn a new song or get reacquainted with an old classic. The kids especially enjoy some of the Alaskan songs we do like Hobo Jim’s Iditarod Trail Song. This year we’re starting off with a fun song called “The Crawdad Song“.

OUR NEW FAVORITE COMPOSER
Last year we all learned a lot about the music of Mozart, Tchaikovsky, and Bonnie Raitt. We will continue to spotlight new composers and we are starting with a look at the stately Franz Joseph Hyden! The kids will learn about his life, his music, and the many innovations he brought to the world of music.
KEY CONCEPTS

This year we will focus on six key concepts that outline the foundation of musical understanding. We will begin with an in-depth look at the three main pillars of music: Rhythm, Melody, and Harmony. From there we will go on to explore lessons in Meter (the way rhythm is organized), Form (the way songs are put together), and Timbre (the quality of sounds).
CHOIR

Choir starts this year on September 16th. Our performance schedule will include concerts with the Band/Orchestra as well as trips to perform in Choir Festivals at area High Schools. Choir meets once-a-week after school in the Music Room (Rm 143) on Tuesdays from 3:30-4:30. Kids need to return a permission slip signed by a parent or guardian and show up ready to SING! If you want to sing along with some of the songs we’re doing this year click HERE to see our Choir Materials page.
